Former Federal Bureau of Investigation Chief James Comey Submits Not Guilty Plea to Allegations of Lying Congress
Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to lawmakers and impeding a legislative process.
The former director's lawyer entered the plea acting as his counsel in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.
The defense lawyer announced he would seek to have the case thrown out for multiple causes including that his defendant, a critic of former President Trump, was being singled out.
Mr Comey was formally accused soon after Trump urged his attorney general to move forward against him.
Judicial Process
In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald advised the court they intended to present several motions to terminate the legal matter before a trial, stating the legal action was spiteful and that a US attorney was unlawfully designated to take over the legal matter.
Mr Comey's proceedings was originally overseen by the original attorney, who left his position under influence from the former president after his examination into an additional opponent - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to file indictments.
Legal Setting
The former director came across in positive mood as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, chatting with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his wife, Patrice Failor and daughter Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the former government recently fired.
Following the reading to the magistrate recite his rights and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, James Comey was asked if he understood the allegations.
"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he told the proceedings.
Background Context
Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from four years and was dismissed about four months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the moment, Mr Comey was leading an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and the presidential campaign.
Throughout his leadership, James Comey triggered a counter-response from liberal politicians when he announced just days before the national vote that he was investigating political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Charges against the candidate were not filed, leading to negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.
Current Allegations
Government attorneys allege Mr Comey gave untrue statements to Congress during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he provided false information to the legislative body by claiming he had not permitted a person at the agency to leak to media organizations information about the agency probes.
Government lawyers also accuse the defendant of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and delay" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.
Individual Responses
In a video the former director posted to his Instagram after he was charged, he stated he was not guilty and alleged the former president of conducting himself like a "dictator".
"Our household have understood for years that there are costs to standing up to the former president," he stated. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "So let's have a legal proceeding."
The accusations against James Comey emerged after the former president published on online platforms insisting on his top legal official, Pam Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and additional individuals.
